Many thanks once again to all of our listeners and viewers. I am learning not only new cities and countries outside of the US, but also some interesting places inside the US that I had never heard of before. For instance, LuLu? Someone please comment and tell me where that is, I couldn’t find it on a search but I have got to know.

We had a listener from Seoul, Koreo today. Yesterday folks from Tesatice and Mistrovice in the Czech Republic, visited our site, and last Tuesday we had a visitor from Rome! Other cities represented in the last couple of weeks: Nastola, Finland; Terrugem, Portugal; Herten, Germany; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and many cities Israel and Australia. Our new friend Lynne Ann is going to Israel shortly to teach a round of classes there, and we have noticed especially on flickr.com, a flurry of activity in Israel with some very colorful polymer clay creations. Sarah Shriver, whom we spoke to a couple weeks ago about the Synergy conference, said that in her travels to Europe this year to teach, there was a lot of innovation going on in Polymer clay. She noted Germany as an up-and-coming place to notice, full of artists who are pushing the creative limits of the clay. She also said that in the world of polyclay, things seem to “see-saw”- with US artists sometimes doing really innovative things, and then it swings around and people in other countries become the innovators. So it looks like it is one of those times. Congratulations, keep up the good work, and feel free to share your beautiful creations in our flickr group.

Polymer Clay TV This Week & Lots Of Polymer Clay Artist Interviews Coming Up

We had a busy weekend full of polymer clay discussions. On Saturday we interviewed Maureen Carlson and on Sunday we interviewed Maggie Maggio .
You will get to hear conversations with Maureen & Maggie as well as Sarah Shriver & Seth Lee Savarick on next weeks Polymer Clay Podcast that will air on August 24th. Our main focus was on finding out more about the National Polymer Clay Guilds upcoming Synergy Conference.
They have a lot of things planned for the event, so make sure to head over to the guilds website on August 20th when they release the catalog. It was a lot of fun getting to know everyone and we are looking forward to meeting everyone in person in Feb. at the conference. We hope you enjoy the interviews as much as we enjoyed doing them. It is great to hear other polymer clay artists perspective on things and I think that is what the event will offer. You will get to hear what other artists think about design, business and teaching. It will be a big networking opportunity and a chance to get to know others that have interest in polymer clay. I personally have never been to a polymer clay retreat or conference so I am really looking forward to it. I am pretty secluded and don’t have much opportunity to get together with a bunch of artists that share a passion for the same thing as me, polymer clay. Kira and I will be covering the conference so we plan on sharing when we get back. We hope to get to meet our listeners and viewers there but for those of you who can’t attend we will have some footage and I am sure stories to bring back to you.

This week on Polymer Clay TV we will be demoing different ways to work with polymer clay and dye ink also known as alcohol ink. Dye ink dries fast and is easy to work with and also has an added bonus of being translucent. Make sure to come back on Friday to watch us demonstrating how we use it. If the site is busy when you try to download the show on Friday you can also always get the show by doing a search for Polymer Clay TV on You Tube, Google Video and Yahoo Video. We are also in over 200 other aggregators and directories. Hope you enjoy the show!

Unfortunately, our server had to take down our site for emergency issues today. We know we were down for a couple hours at mid-day. It stinks because it’s Friday and we know you all wanted your podcast, hopefully everyone got it ok. Sorry folks! I would love to say it won’t happen again, but I didn’t have control over it. Our server is usually pretty reliable but we will consider switching if it becomes an issue. Thank you all for your patience!

Polymer Clay Podcast Episode 8 – how to work with dye or alcohol inks

Click right below to listen to the podcast here on our site. If it’s too busy, try coming back slightly later in the day- we’ve been hearing that Friday mornings it can take a while to download the show. Thank you everyone who enjoy it so much! You can also try using the button on the sidebar (get podcast and videocast here) or subscribe in itunes and it will automatically download onto your itunes account.

Dye or alcohol inks are just that- an ink that is made with alcohol as the solvent, and this type of ink does not lie on top of the clay- rather, it sinks in and actually transforms the color of whatever it touches. A great tool for creating faux stone or seaglass, for mixing into translucent clay to make really nice colors that light will shine through, and other special effects when you would want the dying effect. One little thing we forgot to say- sometimes, especially if you want to avoid making a huge mess, you might want to put some ink on your project and let the alcohol evaporate for a couple of minutes. We demonstrate this in our video next week. If you don’t choose to do this, you will get ink all over your hands and it does temporarily dye your skin. This also produces more waste than if you let it dry for a minute or two. This is NOT the type of ink you would use to stamp with or create an image, because this ink bleeds or seeps away from where you put it.

You would use pigment ink, which we talked about last time (episode 4) for stamping or creating images on the clay.

Pinata and Ranger are two brands we have used. The Pinata inks tend to be bright bold colors, while Ranger carries inks in earthy muted tones (the Adirondack series is what I’m referring to.) Both are great to work with, it just depends on what colors and effects you are looking for.

For News today, we want you to know that in our next podcast on August 24th, we will have 4 interviews with members of the National Polymer Clay Guild www.npcg.org, who will be discussing their involvement in the NPCG’s conference, called Synergy, next February in Baltimore MD. So far we have talked to Seth Lee and Sarah Shriver, and they have had some wonderful things to say, so you won’t want to miss it.

We also received a book from Kalmbach Publishing at the CHA show, and we want to tell you about it. It is called Polymer Pizzazz, and it has the Best of Bead & Button magazine’s articles on working with polymer clay in jewelry projects. It is a very nicely done book with step-by-step instructions. If you are good at following written directions, you will enjoy this book very much. If you need a little more direction, or are very new to polymer clay, some of the projects might be a little challenging. However the great thing is that we have a forum set up especially for our listeners, so if you get into a bind while trying a new technique or can’t figure out written directions, you can always ask in the forum and someone, either Ilysa or Kira, or one of our experienced forum moderators, will give you some guidance.

Thanks for listening! We have put together a great full length tutorial video on using dye inks. Here is a link to purchase our full length project tutorial video showing how to use dye inks and translucent clay to make two votive candle holders- two whole projects in one full length video, and lessons on simple caning too! A great value! Or check out our subscriptions. The Companion Kit to make the projects will be available in our shop this weekend.

It’s Amazing What A Wide Variety of Things You Can Make with Polymer Clay

I was thinking about all the things I have made with polymer clay over the 18 years I have been creating with it. It seems I have never run out of things to make. Here is a list of the few things I have made with polymer clay. Necklaces, earrings, bracelets, anklets, pins, hair baubles, barrettes, incense burners, wine corks, vases, bookshelves, lamps, night lights, fan pulls, drawer pulls, candle holders, candlesticks, boxes, pens, bowls, sculptures, serving pieces and so much more. Those are just a few of the things I made with polymer clay. I did fine art & craft shows for over 10 years and have sold my work to people all over the world so I am always trying to come up with something new that I hadn’t done before. I think in life you need to push yourself to try new things, especially as an artist. Every show we will have something different that we hope will inspire you to be creative and try new techniques, projects and products. Kira and I work very differently and there is no right or wrong way to work with polymer clay so just let yourself and your hands do what they do. Some techniques you can master on the first try while some others take lots of practice. Find what works for you and go for it. As the saying goes practice makes perfect. Hope you have a creative week!

This Friday there will be a new podcast so make sure to check that out. Enjoy!
