This week we are talking about creating masks with polymer clay. Masks are a lot of fun to make, when I start I never know what my final piece will look like. I am the kind of person to just jump in and let my hands do what they will. I very rarely plan the final outcome of a piece of my artwork. I guess you could say I let it flow. I usually let the colors influence me and start by laying out an assortment of colors on my work surface and seeing what speaks to me for that particular project. I make my mask bases entirely out of polymer clay. I like to make sure I have a nice sturdy base for my mask, so I don’t have to worry about it breaking or cracking on me. You should consider the weight and thickness of the clay if you plan to actually wear the mask. You can also make masks that are similar to the Mardi Gras masks that are on a stick and held up to your face. If your mask is very elaborate and has more weight than is comfortable to wear you might consider making this style. Masks are a blast to make and can really make the difference between a so so costume and a fabulous one. Feel free to embellish your masks anyway you like, I could see some real feathers added for a really neat look. Don’t forget to raid your scrapboo
k and rubber stamp supplies. You can use stamps and add glitter, brads, eyelets, paper, ink, metal charms, glass marbles and so much more. I would stay away from using plastic as it would probably melt but you could always add something plastic by gluing it on after baking. There is really so much you can do to create your own masterpiece, so just have fun!
This Friday there is a new episode of Polymer Clay Podcast and we will be reviewing some magazines we received and sharing some of the goodies that are in them. I love reading magazines and seeing all the new creations and techniques. I have to admit I usually don’t make any of them but I like to read them and enjoy all the great photos and get inspiration.
Don’t forget to get your entry for the Call For Creativity uploaded to the forum post, the deadline to enter is October 28,2007. We will be giving away some great prizes and will be featuring the winner on our website. Have fun and good luck!
